Final Report: Safeguarding Bagan within the World Heritage Framework

coverfinal-report-safeguarding-bagan.jpgThe project “Safeguarding Bagan within the World Heritage Framework” (2015-2018), implemented with the generous support of the National Federation of UNESCO Associations in Japan (NFUAJ), achieved its main objective to support Myanmar with the preparation and nomination of Bagan to the World Heritage List and to strengthen the management of the site in line with international standards. The project has contributed meaningfully to improving the overall enabling environment for safeguarding Bagan. The management system developed under the project is being put in place, which provides a rigorous framework for the management of the site in the long run. In addition to enhanced legal, regulatory and statutory instruments, the project has also supported Myanmar with the development of a comprehensive set of technical guidelines for the conservation of Bagan. Together, these will provide a basis for harmonized actions by both international, national and local partners working at the site.

The earthquake that took place on 24 August 2016 posed a major challenge for the Department of Archaeology and National Museum. Within the approved project scope of strengthening the protection of Bagan, the NFUAJ project was able to mobilize multi-disciplinary experts to provide assistance in terms of emergency response and rehabilitation.
